Ultimate Cleaning Business Pricing Guide

Understanding how to properly price your skills, talents, and hard work can be difficult. You know how well you clean, but your first-time clients may not. The following tips will help you to determine the right way to price your cleaning services

Identify Your Target Market

Your target market encompasses who your potential clientele will be. How you identify your target market is by looking at your desired location’s:

  • Demographics
  • Income
  • Competitors

Your first step as a cleaning business is to establish where, and who, you want to target. Knowing who you are providing your cleaning services to will help down the line when it comes to marketing.

In terms of pricing, understanding your target market’s income and demographics will help shape your service fees. For instance, if you charge a premium fee in an area with a lower cost of living, your local market may not be able to afford your services and will look elsewhere for a cleaner.

Research Your Competitors

As mentioned above, researching your competitors is a key component of identifying your target market. Your competitors set the bar when it comes to pricing your cleaning services. They also help you to identify where to offer your services.

The trick to using your competitors to your advantage is not to storm into a saturated market at a significantly higher or lower price than your competitors. The best way to handle a new market is to study it and see where your talents and skills will help you obtain clients.

Create Your Pricing Structure

Once you are aware of your target market’s wants and needs, you will be able to create your pricing structure. Your pricing structure is essentially a guideline for how you plan on entering your market.

The 3 main common pricing structures are:

  • Penetration: This is where you intentionally set your pricing significantly lower than your competitors in hopes of gaining traffic. The only problem with this strategy is that it is rare to see a long-term profit.
  • Competitive Pricing: This pricing strategy is where you match the market pricing of your competitors, but doing so can make it difficult to differentiate your cleaning business. To make this strategy effective, you’ll want to ensure clients can discern your value over that of a competitor.
  • Value Pricing: The easiest way to enter your target market is to truly understand what your potential clients are willing to pay. You will obtain this kind of information by looking at your target market’s demographics and income.

Communicate Your Pricing Properly to Clients

A common mistake new cleaners can make is not directly communicating with clients about their pricing. To ensure that your skills are compensated for, let your client know right from the beginning what your payment standards are.

It is recommended not to give an actual price estimate until you have seen the property first. This is key for cleaners who charge an hourly rate.

If you tell your client that you will clean their home in two hours without looking at their property, they are expecting to only pay for two hours’ worth of work. But, if you wind up taking an extra hour because the house was dirtier than expected, it may deter the client from booking with you again. This is why communication is essential in this type of industry.

Remain Competitive in the Cleaning Industry

Understanding the industry that you are in will only benefit you in the long run. Your competitors are like-minded individuals and constantly researching ways to improve. To stay on top of your cleaning service prices, you’ll want to remain up to date with the latest industry-leading pricing range for your state. This will aid you in making adjustments when necessary.
